WOODBURN MAN DIES IS TWO-VEHICLE CRASH ON HWY 240 NEAR NEWBERG (PHOTO)

On August 4, 2017, at about 11:17PM, OSP Troopers were dispatched to a two vehicle crash on Highway 240 near milepost 6.5 in Yamhill County, which is just west of Newberg. Preliminary investigation determined that a 2003 Ford F-350 pickup, being operated by 24 year old Jeffrey BERNARDS of McMinnville. BERNARDS was traveling eastbound on Highway 240 when a 2002 Ford Focus, operated by 18 year old Fredy ROMERO-LOPEZ of Woodburn, who was traveling westbound crossed into the eastbound lane and into the path of the pickup hitting it head-on.

BERNARDS was transported by ground ambulance to Newberg Hospital with minor injuries. ROMERO-LOPEZ was pronounced deceased at the scene. A witness described the Focus passing other vehicles and traveling at a high rate of speed just prior to the crash.

OSP was assisted at by the Yamhill County Sheriff's Office, Newberg Police Department, Woodburn Police Department, Tualatin-Valley Fire & Rescue and ODOT.
