****************************UPDATE 07-05-17 ***********************************

Updated status of K9 Grimm.

We have received many inquiries about how K9 Grimm is doing, and wanted to let the public know that he is doing well. Fortunately, K9 Grimm was wearing his body armor when he engaged the suspect, which minimized the impact from the blows he received. These working dogs are tough, and they provide an invaluable service to our community.

K9 Grimm's handler, Deputy Erik McGlothin, tells us that he took the day off to give Grimm time to rest. They went for a light hike and stayed cool in the waters of a local stream. (see attached photos)

****************************End update******************************************

On 07-04-17 at about 12:15pm, the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a domestic disturbance in the 18000 block SE Sunnyside Rd., Damascus, OR. The caller indicated her brother, 35 year old Mario Reyes-Orozco, was on drugs and was threatening the rest of the family with an axe, trying to hit them with it.

When Deputies arrived in the area, they were able to get family members out of the residence, and safely away from the threat being created by their brother. Deputies attempted to contact the suspect at the residence, however he closed and locked all of the doors and refused to communicate with the Deputies.

Deputies observed the suspect had armed himself with a variety of weapons, such as the axe and fireplace poker. Due to the erratic nature of the subject, and reports that he was under the influence of drugs, the Clackamas County SWAT Team and Hostage Negotiations Team were called out to assist with taking the barricaded suspect into custody.

Additional attempts to contact the suspect were made, but rebuffed. The SWAT Team was forced to make entry into the residence to arrest the suspect, and utilized CCSO K9 Grimm. K9 Grimm located the suspect and engaged the suspect, who was still refusing to surrender. The suspect actively resisted K9 Grimm, striking him repeatedly with a pipe, until SWAT members were able to take him into custody.

The suspect was transported by AMR ground ambulance to an area hospital for evaluation and treatment of a dog bite, received during his altercation with K9 Grimm. After which, he will be lodged at the Clackamas County Jail.

K9 Grimm has some swelling from being struck with a pipe, and will be evaluated for injuries.

The suspect will be facing charges of:

Menacing
Unlawful Use of a Weapon
Interfering with a Law Enforcement Animal
