BEAVERTON, Ore. -- Families looking for fun, free things to do during summer vacation can find them at Beaverton City Library. The main event is summer reading, a popular program designed to encourage children of all ages to read this summer. Last year, more than 7,700 kids and teens took part.

To participate in summer reading, kids and teens must first sign up online at or in person at Beaverton City Library Main, 12375 SW Fifth St., or the Murray Scholls branch, 11200 SW Murray Scholls Pl., by July 24.

Kids and teens (from birth through grade 12) can read, be read to or listen to audiobooks for a total of 15 hours. Participants keep track of time spent reading fiction, non-fiction, ebooks, comic books, newspapers, magazines or blogs. After completing 15 hours of reading, participants can return to the library between July 10 and Aug. 20 for a free paperback book and a folder full of coupons for free food and activities.

In addition to the summer reading program, the library offers free events for all ages. From Beach Blanket Babies for little ones to Disassembly Party for tweens to Anime Club for teens, there is something for everyone. Event calendars are available at the library and on the library's website,

To further encourage families to read this summer and beyond, children's materials in all formats are free from overdue fines as of June 1, 2017 at all Washington County Collaborative Library Services (WCCLS) member libraries, including Beaverton City Library. By eliminating overdue fines on children's materials, the library eliminates a barrier for children and families as they develop lifelong reading habits.

Summer reading and its associated programs are free and open to the public. Some events require registration; to register, visit or call 503-350-3600.
