On May 9, 2017 at approximately 5:00 PM, the Oregon State Police responded to a two vehicle crash on I-5 near MP 256 (in Salem). The crash resulted in a passenger, identified as Brandon Lin (age 22 from Portland) losing his life in surgery from his injuries.

Preliminary investigation indicates a 2006 Honda Accord was traveling northbound in the B (middle) lane and an Affordable Tow truck was northbound in the C (slow) lane. The driver of the Honda, identified as Laurie Son (age 18 from Beaverton), changed lanes into the tow truck and lost control. The driver of the tow truck was identified as Andrew Hillman (age 26 from Portland).

The Honda impacted a tree on the right shoulder. The right front passenger of the Honda, identified as Jeremy Danh (age 22 from Portland) and Laurie Son received minor injuries. Andrew Hillman was not injured.
