PF&R CREWS WORK TO CONTAIN ELECTRICAL VAULT FIRE IN NW PORTLAND

News Release from Portland Fire & Rescue
Posted on FlashAlert: May 22nd, 2017 11:37 PM
At approx 6:15pm this evening PF&R responded to multiple reports of smoke from underground grates in roadways of NW Portland, specifically the NW Park blocks area. Initial crews reporting seeing some burning material visible from the street when looking down into to tunnel grates. Reports of smoke from similar storm grates spread to several blocks of NW Portland. Eventually the problem was identified as an electric vault on fire. Crews followed normal operating procedure of not applying water to the electrical fire but instead evaluating and preparing for secondary hazards (i.e. fire and health hazards).
The fire is considered under control but power outages are being reported in a large area of NW Portland. Pacific Power has been identified as the responsible agency for the agency and has begun a call back of several employees to restore power and repair damages. They are asking people affected to use their website for information about outages, areas affected and time line for restoration of utilities. Pacific Power is providing specific information for customers at www.pacificpower.net or 888-221-7070.
