Clark County Sheriff's Office Corrections Deputies were in an officer involved shooting today about 10:41 hours while guarding a jail inmate at PeaceHealth Hospital. An inmate at the Clark County Jail, a 66 year old male, was held on charges of Parole Violation, escape from community custody, and unlawful possession of a firearm; U.S. Marshal's Service Warrant. The inmate had complained of experiencing a medical issue and was transferred under guard to PeaceHeath SW Medical Center the morning of Wednesday, May 17th. The inmate remained under guard from Corrections Deputies overnight in the hospital. At approximately 10:41 Hrs today the inmate took action which resulted in an Officer Involved shooting. The inmate was immediately provided emergency medical care and was taken into surgery but succumbed to his injury and died.
No hospital staff was injured. Neither deputy involved was injured. The circumstances of the shooting are under investigation of the Regional Major Crimes Team under Vancouver Police Lead. The Corrections Deputies have been placed on Critical Incident Leave, a standard practice for OIS incidents. No further information concerning this investigation will be released at this time. The identity of the deceased inmate will be released by the Medical Examiner's Office following notification of next of kin.
