Ref Marion County Sheriff news release from Dec 19, 2015:

"Quick Actions Save Lives in Watery Crash ***Update*** Time of Crash Added (Photo) - 12/19/15
Today's crash occurred at about 2:30 p.m.

Michelle Schroll, 46 of Salem and her 11 year old grandson are alive thanks to her quick actions and fireman who made a daring rescue to save both of their lives. For reasons unknown Ms. Schroll struck a bridge abutment and then careened into Zollner Creek on Monitor McKee Road NE near Baron Road NE.

Ms. Schroll and her grandson were able to escape their fully submerged car and clung to a tree until rescuers with the Mt. Angel Fire Department arrived. Firefighters were able to get life preservers to both victims and then cantaleivered a ladder to hoist rescuers out over the water and down to Ms. Schroll and her grandson.

Ms. Scroll and her grandson have been taken to Salem Hospital and are expected to survive. Deputies are remaining on scene while Marion County Public Works examines the bridge. The road is expected to remain open and it is unknown at this time how or when the car will be recovered."

Ms Scroll wants to thank the members of Mt Angel Fire district by meeting with them at Mt Angel Fire Station, 300 Monroe St in Mt Angel. We invite members of the media to be present to interview the woman, fire fighters, and perhaps the child. This will be at approximately 7:00pm on Wednesday, January 13, 2016. This is our usual drill night so we anticipate approximately 30 minutes for this event.
