PORTLAND FIRE & RESCUE RESPONDS TO SMOKE IN A HIGH RISE

Portland Fire & Rescue responded to 222 SW Harrison St. at about 5:00 pm this evening to reports of smoke on multiple levels of the 25 story apartment building. Residents were advised to shelter in place while crews worked to locate the source of the smoke. A small fire was found in the buildings trash compactor at the base of the building. Smoke had traveled back up the garbage chute and onto several floors.

The fire was quickly extinguished leaving smoke removal from the structure as the main priority. Fortunately this building was recently renovated and is now equipped with specialized equipment to do just that. The air in the building was pressurized, forcing the smoke out and letting fresh air in.

Public transit was impacted while crews were working on scene.

An investigator is working to determine the exact cause of the fire.
