On December 24, 2015 at about 9:30AM, OSP Troopers and emergency personnel responded to the report of a two vehicle crash on Highway 199 near milepost 21 (two miles north of Cave Junction).

Preliminary information indicates a 2004 Saturn sedan was traveling eastbound on Highway 199 when it lost control on the icy road conditions. The Saturn slid sideways into a path of a westbound 2005 Honda Civic, where it was struck on the passenger side. The Saturn came to rest on the shoulder of the westbound lane and Honda came to rest on the highway.

The front passenger of the Saturn, Darlene K VARNEY, age 61, of Cave Junction, was pronounced deceased on scene. The driver of the Saturn, Kaye L VARNEY, age 35, of Angwin, California, was transported to Three Rivers Community Hospital for serious injuries. The rear passenger of the Saturn, Ronald L VARNEY, age 61, of Cave Junction, was transported to Three Rivers Community Hospital for treatment of life threatening injuries. He was subsequently transferred to PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend in Springfield. Evidence suggests he was not wearing his seatbelt.

The driver of the Honda, was transported to Three Rivers Community Hospital for treatment of minor injuries and has since been released.

This is an ongoing investigation. More information will be released when it becomes available.
