Traffic Division officers have conducted a preliminary investigation into this morning's crash on I-84 westbound to I-5 northbound.

Investigators have determined that a 2009 Nissan Versa, driven by 22-year-old Jordan-Ashlee Sylvester of Portland, was driving in the right lane of the ramp and switched to the left lane with the intent of continuing on I-5 northbound.

A 2010 Mack Tractor with a 53' cargo trailer, driven by 67-year-old David Lee Sitton of Arlington, Oregon, was in the left lane when the Nissan Versa collided with the right front tire of the tractor, causing the Nissan to swerve to the right and hit the concrete barrier. The tractor-trailer swerved to the left, rode up and over the 4' railing and drop 49' below to the Union Pacific Railroad property below the freeway. The Union Pacific Railroad office building sustained some damage from the falling truck.

Ms. Sylvester was not injured during the crash. She remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. She was not impaired by drugs or alcohol. A passenger in her car was transported to a Portland hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The truck driver, Mr. Sitton, remains in a Portland hospital in serious condition. Mr. Sitton's family is requesting privacy at this time.

No citations have yet been issued and the case remains under investigation.

The tractor-trailer is owned by Walsh Trucking Company in Troutdale, Oregon.

This morning, Wednesday June 19, 2013, at 3:28 a.m., Central Precinct officers responded to the report of a roll-over traffic crash on I-84 Westbound at the I-5 Northbound interchange.

Officers arrived and learned that a tractor-trailer collided with a vehicle on the I-5 northbound onramp from I-84 and the tractor-trailer rolled off of the ramp onto a parking lot below the freeway. Officers at the scene estimate the distance to be at least 60' down from the freeway to the parking lot.

Portland Fire & Rescue personnel are at the scene working to extract the truck driver who is pinned inside the cab of the truck. The driver of the other vehicle remained at the scene and did not receive any injuries.

The northbound I-5 ramp from westbound I-84 will remain closed as Traffic officers conduct a crash investigation. There is no time estimate on when the ramp will reopen.

I-84 westbound traffic could experience significant delays because of the crash. Drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes.

Train traffic is unaffected by the crash.

The cause of the crash is currently under investigation and no further information is available at this time.
